How Mobile Banking Adoption is Fueling ATM Usage
BFC Enterprises • June 5, 2025

As mobile banking adoption rises, it’s creating a ripple effect across all banking channels - especially ATMs. Contrary to the popular belief that mobile banking replaces traditional banking touchpoints, the opposite is happening. Recent data shows increased mobile engagement leads to more frequent ATM usage.

According to the Federal Reserve Board’s 2023 Consumers and Mobile Financial Services report, mobile banking has surpassed branches and other traditional channels, with over 48% of U.S. adults preferring mobile access. The trend is even more pronounced among Millennials and Gen Z, with usage rates exceeding 70% in those age groups.

Mobile Banking Drives Higher ATM Usage
A recent Deloitte study found that consumers who use mobile banking are also more likely to use ATMs. Consumers who frequently use mobile banking cite being more comfortable with self-service channels and report using ATMs to withdraw cash, check their account balances and make deposits via advanced ATMs and ITMs. And ATM usage is higher among mobile banking customers. A 2024 survey by PYMNTS revealed that 37% of mobile banking users visit the ATM at least once a week, compared to only 24% of non-mobile users.

Branch Visits Decline, Self-Service Use Climbs
While the traditional bank branch is still important, especially for complex transactions like withdrawing large amounts of cash or obtaining a loan, the reliance on the traditional branch is decreasing rapidly. Consumers report visiting a branch less often and increased interactions with digital tools and ATMs. This shift is prompting financial institutions to rethink their ATM strategies as they seek to balance physical access points while decreasing the cost of operating costly branches.

Why Financial Institutions Must Prioritize ATM Networks
These behavioral shifts underscore the importance of maintaining a reliable ATM network - especially for banks and credit unions looking to attract younger, tech-savvy customers. Strategic deployment through in-house fleets, ATM outsourcing, surcharge-free networks, or well-placed off-premise ATMs - located where account holders work, shop, and live - ensures convenient cash access and provides essential touchpoints that meet customers where they are.
